What advice do you have for new lawyers?
Take the time to learn your new craft. You have completed a very successful academic career and probably have had success in other endeavors in your life, but there are many new skills you need to learn to succeed and progress as a lawyer. Be willing to listen to advice and even criticism of others and don’t be discouraged.
How have you seen your practice change?
There have been a number of changes in the practice of law since I started, but perhaps the most prevalent is the increased pressure for speed. Ours has always been a demanding profession, but immediate turnaround time and constant availability seem to be even more in demand. While it is often times very hard to resist these demands for immediacy, it is important to take the time to take a step back and think through issues critically.
What do you like most about being a lawyer?
I like being a member of a respected profession that provides valuable services to our clients and to our communities. As I take on more management and leadership responsibilities, I also very much enjoy helping younger attorneys learn and grow.
