When Cecilia Horan started practicing law in 1997, issues facing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community weren’t discussed openly in the workplace.
Twelve years later, Hinshaw & Culbertson’s event on LGBT adoption represents a significant change in how these issues are discussed, moving from behind the curtain to center stage.
Moderated by Horan on June 1, about 30 people attended the event “LGBT Adoption: Managing the Process at Home and at Work.” The purpose was to discuss the essential steps of adoption and the problems that could arise at home and the workplace for members of the LGBT community.
“We were hoping to try and help people who are thinking about [adoption],” said Horan, a partner at Hinshaw & Culbertson. “There are concrete steps to take that a lot of people don’t understand. It’s a long process, but also a doable one.”
She said a critical part of the adoption process is signing up with an adoption agency, which can assist in the process of getting a license — a requirement in Illinois. Adoption agencies also provide the emotional support for families, which can be almost as important as the logistical assistance.
Horan said the response she’s received thus far has been great.
“We had a little reception [after the event] where people stuck around and talked a lot,” she said. “The vibe I got is that people became well informed and had a positive experience about the event.”
Horan was pleased with the attendance and is confident these events will continue to grow in the future.
The event was part of a calendar of month-long celebratory and educational events, called Citywide Pride 2009. Hosted by partnering Chicago-area companies, this consortium not only celebrates workplace diversity, but also promotes action from members of the LGBT community.
Horan credits the media for changing the landscape in favor of LGBT openness and allowing these kinds of events to transpire.
“I think people are more enlightened,” she said. “Gay marriage is huge all over the country and parts of the world. The mainstream media is portraying gay couples and families, and there is an evolution of the social conscience.”
Horan hopes more law firms take Hinshaw & Culbertson’s example in promoting workplace diversity.
“It’s critical … and sets a long-term precedent,” she said. “I hope people who don’t feel comfortable [talking about LGBT issues] become the pioneers to be heard. Nothing good can come from staying in the closet.”
